Why were the 2020 & 2021 FHNB Madison Chapter Events cancelled?

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic forced our hand. In 2020 we had already begun planning, and had to halt all preparations due to the highly contractible and deadly pandemic. The safety of the individuals we take fishing, and our volunteers is our utmost importance.

We also decided to cancel the 2021 event due to the ongoing pandemic. It takes over 6 months of planning and over 300 volunteers for us to put this event together. In December 2020 / January 2021 we couldn’t predict where the pandemic would be. The vaccine had not yet been released, there was no way to predict how available it would be, or how safe things would be in July 2021. We simply didn’t have as much information as we have today. Therefore, we used the information we had at the time and took the safe route to keep everyone safe – people we take fishing are higher risk of illness and fatality –  so we came up with an alternative.  A virtual event! Most other FHNB chapters were not as lucky and have had to cancel altogether, due to the reasons just listed;  we are very proud to come up with this virtual option as a place holder until 2022, where we hope to return to our in-person weekend of fishing!

I want to go fishing, am I eligible?

We do not have pre-requisites for eligibility to fish. This event is for individuals with a disability, to make our Wisconsin waters more accessible for those who do not normally have the privilege. Registration is limited to 100 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis.

I want to volunteer, what are the requirements?

Anyone can volunteer! You must be 16 years or older to become a volunteer. Anyone volunteering under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Previous fishing knowledge or experience is not required to become a volunteer. We have plenty of opportunities for you to make a difference and participate in this fun weekend!

I would like to donate fishing supplies, do you accept in-kind donations?

Thank you for thinking of us! We truly appreciate you considering us, it is very generous of you! Many people reach out to us over the years to donate items when cleaning out their basements, or a loved one’s home.

FHNB Madison Chapter maintains a specific set of equipment, so that we have all replacement parts if something should break. Because of this, we do not accept donations of fishing equipment. However, you can head over to our Resources page and perhaps one of those entities would be able to put your gift to good use.
